In 1868 when cork stoppers were launched the Wicander family embarked on what was to become a family legacy in the cork industry. For more than a century, one thing has remained consistent at WE Cork, and that is their love and passion for cork. They are so passionate about this specific material is because of its beauty, resilience, and ability to regenerate. The fact that cork can regenerate itself makes this material environment-friendly.
Cork is the bark of an Oak tree, which is botanically known as Quercus Suber. It is grown only in areas that border the Mediterranean Sea, most importantly Portugal, Spain, Algeria, France, Morocco, Italy, and Tunisia.

The first harvest cannot happen till the tree is approximately twenty years old. There is a thin layer of protective inner bark, which gives the cork the ability to regenerate itself after the debarking process. This ability o survive and regenerate after the debarking is why cork is a sustainable material.
